The culture of Ojiya,
shaped into a journey
of your own.

ABOUT HIYORI

Not a tour of famous sights,
but time spent with people.

There is more to Ojiya than any guidebook can tell.
Katakai, where fireworks have long marked the turning points of a life.
Nishikigoi — ornamental koi — that went from here to the world.
Sake and food born of snow-country water and rice.
A culture rooted in the land, and the people who live with it.

HIYORI listens to the wishes behind each journey,
and shapes time that can be spent only in this place.

Something that matters more
than the greatest bloom.
Katakai is known for its shō-yonshakudama, a four-shaku shell some 120 cm across — among the largest in the world. Yet what makes the town’s fireworks special is not their size alone.

A birth, a coming of age, a marriage, a sixtieth birthday. Gratitude, and prayer. At the festival, before each firework rises, the name of the giver and their message are read aloud.

You look up knowing a little of someone’s life — and the same firework is no longer the same.
From parent to child,
and on to the next generation.
Fireworks are raised for a child just born. A child once celebrated by their parents grows up, and one day raises fireworks for a child of their own. A whole family sends fireworks to a mother turning ninety-nine.

These are true stories of Katakai. The fireworks fade, but the feelings placed in them stay on in a family’s memory.
A town that offers
its fireworks to the gods.
The fireworks of the Katakai Festival are hōnō enka — offerings to Asahara Shrine. Continued since the Edo period, the custom is woven deeply into the lives of the townspeople.

Old banzuke, the festival’s printed programmes, record the type and size of each firework and the name of the person who offered it.

Times have changed, but the wish to entrust one’s heart to a firework has been handed down unchanged.

HOW WE DESIGN

A journey is not chosen from a set menu.
It begins with listening.

01
TALK
First, we listen. Who will be travelling with you? What would you like to celebrate? How would you like to spend your time?
02
DESIGN
We bring together Ojiya’s culture, food, people and places to stay, and propose a way of spending your days that suits your wishes.
03
ARRANGE
We coordinate dates, details and conditions with local partners and everyone involved.
04
EXPERIENCE
On the day, we take care not only of the journey’s flow, but of the time you spend here — and what lingers after.
Enquire About Your Journey
A person walking through the streets of Ojiya
“Today was a perfect Ojiya day.”
A journey that leaves you saying so.

We live here —
and there is an Ojiya
we long to share.

We live and work in Ojiya, and have walked alongside the people and culture of this land.

The turning of the seasons, traditions handed down, the richness found in ordinary days.

Scenes that feel everyday to those of us who live here may become, for a traveller, an encounter never forgotten.

We turn that quiet charm into special time with the people you love. HIYORI offers journeys that only those who know this land could create.
